Jonathan Smith is an American football coach who was born on 18 January, 1979 in Pasadena, California, United States. He is currently the head coach of the Washington State Cougars football team. Smith attended Glendora High School in Glendora, California, where he was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. He went on to play college football at Oregon State University, where he was a four-year starter at quarterback from 1998 to 2001. Smith began his coaching career in 2003 as a graduate assistant at Idaho. He then moved on to Montana State, where he was the quarterbacks coach from 2004 to 2006. He then served as the offensive coordinator at Montana from 2007 to 2009. In 2010, Smith joined the staff of the University of New Mexico as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He then moved on to the University of Washington in 2012, where he served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach until 2018. Smith was previously the quarterbacks coach for two seasons at Boise State, also under Petersen, and the offensive coordinator for two seasons at Montana. He was the quarterbacks coach for six seasons (2004–2009) at Idaho under three head coaches: Nick Holt, Dennis Erickson, and Robb Akey. Prior to his tenure with the Vandals in Moscow, Smith was a graduate assistant at his alma mater in 2002 and 2003 under Erickson and Mike Riley.

Smith was a four-year starter for the Beavers at quarterback, taking over midway through his redshirt freshman season in 1998 and maintaining the job through his senior season in 2001. As a junior in 2000 under Dennis Erickson, he led the Beavers to their greatest season in school history. The Beavers finished 11–1 –a school record for wins, won a share of their first conference title in 36 years, and finished fourth in the country. Smith was the MVP of the Fiesta Bowl.
